Calif. filmmaker arrested in Aspen

A California music-video producer and documentary filmmaker faces felony trespassing and misdemeanor theft charges after being arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning at the Marolt Place seasonal-housing development.

Andrew Lawrence Anthony, 27, whose permanent residence is listed as Ukiah, Calif., was released from the Pitkin County Jail on Saturday after posting a $6,000 bond. He also faces one count of fraud related to criminal possession of a financial device, according to police records.

An arrest affidavit with details of the incident that led to his 2:25 a.m. arrest by Aspen policeman Jeff Fain was not available Monday.

When reached by phone Monday evening, Anthony, who is living in Aspen for the winter, characterized the incident that led to his arrest and the arrest itself as a “misunderstanding.” However, he declined further comment, saying he had yet to speak with a lawyer.

Police allege that Anthony was intoxicated when he showed up at an acquaintance’s apartment on Thursday night and then was asked to leave. Upon leaving, he took some items with him, police said.

He allegedly returned to the apartment and was told to leave again. A day later, Fain arrested him, according to police.

A website for Best Coast Productions of Santa Barbara, Calif., lists Anthony as the CEO. The website describes Best Coast as a video-production company “focused on promoting underground music with a positive message, small business and extreme sports.” The company opened for business four years ago.

According to the movie-information website, Anthony co-directed and shot a 2012 documentary called “Stillness,” featuring the voice of Irish-American actor Malachy McCourt, brother of the late Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Frank McCourt. “Stillness” is described on IMDb as “a visual meditation filmed in the mountains, along the coast and in the forests of Northern California.”

Anthony’s initial court appearance is scheduled for April 7.
