EL JEBEL - A U.S. Postal Service worker was seriously injured Thursday in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 82 between El Jebel and Carbondale.
The 54-year-old Glenwood Springs woman's name was being withheld Thursday evening, pending notification of family members, according to the Colorado State Patrol. She was pulling onto Highway 82 from the Cerise Ranch subdivision when her vehicle was struck by a westbound pickup truck. The pickup truck's driver was uninjured.
Authorities believe the postal worker was unrestrained. She was pinned under her vehicle for a short time before bystanders lifted it off of her and provided aid until medical help arrived, according to the patrol. She was transported to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs and issued a citation for careless driving.
The postal vehicle suffered considerable damage. Its engine was lying in the grass alongside the highway, some distance from the vehicle. Firefighters helped remove undelivered parcels from the vehicle; they were transferred to a Postal Service van.
The pickup truck wound up facing downvalley in the upvalley lanes of Highway 82, while the postal vehicle came to a stop on the edge of the downvalley lanes. Traffic in both directions was disrupted and downvalley lanes were closed for about two hours; downvalley traffic was diverted onto the frontage road between the Blue Lake subdivision and Catherine Store Road.
The Carbondale Police Department, Garfield County Sheriff's Office, Colorado Department of Transportation and the Carbondale and Basalt fire departments also responded to the scene.
