Snowmass' place in ski racing

SNOWMASS VILLAGE - "Stapleton wins pro slalom race" announced a headline in the Aspen Times in 1985. "Dave Stapleton (Jr) came to the rescue Sunday at the Peugeot Grand Prix First Interstate Bank Cup slalom at Winter Park.

"Shaking off a troublesome back injury, the 25-year-old Aspenite won the pro race and in the process put at least a temporary halt to the domination of Norway's Halsnes brothers." This image of Stapleton was taken at the Peugeot Grand Prix in Keystone in 1981 during his first pro race of the season. In March, Sam Coffey, of Snowmass Village, podiumed at the NCAA skiing national championship, showing that local athletes are still holding their own in ski racing.
