Aspen Skiers to open hockey playoffs in Denver area

ASPEN - The Aspen High School hockey team will open the state playoffs Friday night against Mountain Vista High School, of Highlands Ranch, at the South Suburban Ice Arena in the Denver area.

The Skiers, coming off a big 4-2 victory over defending state champion Regis Jesuit last weekend, were seeded No. 7 for their half of the 16-team Colorado High School Activities Association bracket.

Aspen (11-8) will play No. 2 Mountain Vista (16-3) at 7:45 p.m. Friday as part of a playoff doubleheader at South Suburban.

No. 3 Resurrection Christian (14-3-2), of Loveland, will play No. 6 Doherty (13-6) in the earlier game at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

The winners will advance to Round 2 and a state quarterfinal game at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the South Suburban Ice Arena, which is located in Centennial.

The state semifinals will be played Feb. 28 with the state championship game one night later on March 1. The semifinals and championship will be played at Magness Arena on the campus of the University of Denver.

The other matchups on Aspen's side of the bracket include No. 1 Ralston Valley (16-2-1) vs. No. 8 Bishop Machebeuf (7-12) and No. 4 Valor Christian (14-4-1) vs. No. 5 Standley Lake (12-5-2). Those games will be played at APEX in Arvada.

The No. 1 seed in the other half of the bracket is Fountain Valley (15-4), of Colorado Springs, set for a first-round game against No. 8 Chatfield (8-10-1).

No. 4 Regis Jesuit (14-2-3) will play No. 5 Heritage (14-5), also at the Sertich Ice Arena in Colorado Springs.

At the Superior Ice Arena, No. 2 Monarch (16-1-2) will take on Lewis-Palmer (10-8-1), and No. 3 Air Academy (13-4-1) will play Mullen (10-8-1).

Aspen will take a two-game winning streak into Friday night's playoff game, including Saturday's win over Regis.

Jack Doremus leads the Skiers with 16 goals this season along with six assists.

Garrett Goldsmith has eight goals and six assists. Julian Gregory also scored eight times for the Skiers this season.
