City expands its 'affordable' portfolio

Dear Editor:

Why is it no surprise our mayor would advocate that the city buy the Mountain House? After demonstrating unequaled expertise in building and operating hundreds of affordable-housing units, why not extend the city's finely honed housing expertise to the lodging industry and create, dare anyone say, "affordable lodging"?

The next logical step after killing private-sector lodging, such as the Lift One project, is to start soaking up uncompetitive private-sector projects so their uncompetitiveness can be perpetuated, if not magnified, by the city. Attention, all owners of marginal, uncompetitive lodging in Aspen: The city is buying; prepare your sales proposals.

If this plan proceeds, at least no one will have to wonder why the city has no money to maintain the siding, roofs, stairs, walk and other infrastructure of affordable housing; the money will be subsidizing affordable lodging.
