SNOWMASS VILLAGE - Prior to the opening of any lifts in Snowmass, Snowmass Ski tours operated a snowcat tour of the mountain. This image shows several people unloading from the snowcat at the top of the ski area with a majestic view of surrounding mountains, circa 1965. The cabin now known as the Wine Cabin off of Sneaky's ski run served as a picnic point for the operation. The tours ran from around 1963 to 1967, after which Snowmass opened with lifts serving many of the same areas.

Editor's note: This page is a partnership between the Snowmass Sun and the Aspen Historical Society with two primary goals in mind: to improve the knowledge of Snowmass history in the region and to collect historic photographs of the Snowmass region for the society. If you have pieces of history to donate, please send them to or call 970-925-3721.
