Viceroy ranks among best hotels in state

SNOWMASS VILLAGE --U.S. News and World Report has ranked the Viceroy Snowmass as the 11th best hotel in the state of Colorado.

The Viceroy was featured in the magazine's list of best hotels in the country, which hit the newsstands Jan. 29. The hotel was the only Snowmass Village property ranked on the statewide list. On a list of the best hotels in Aspen, U.S. News placed the Viceroy second only to The Little Nell.

"Viceroy Snowmass ranks #2 out of 39 Aspen Hotels based on an evaluation of expert ratings and awards, as well as user reviews," the explanation given on the website reads. "The hotel scored high enough to make the U.S. News list of the Best Hotels in Aspen."

The Little Nell in Aspen was ranked No. 14 in the country and No. 1 in Colorado.

The website says it ranks hotels "based on an analysis of expert and user opinions" rather than providing the personal opinions of its editors. Only luxury hotels are included, and rankings are calculated by evaluating a property's awards and recognition, a class rating and guest reviews at TripAdvisor.com.

The editors seem a bit confused about where the Viceroy Snowmass is, though.

"Rising prominently above Snowmass Village near the foot of Vail's most popular slopes," the description reads, "this massive resort features a variety of outdoor activities, from skiing in the winter to hiking in the summer."

The report also mentioned high praise from guests for the hotel's "chic atmosphere"; amenities, including the spa, pool, and 8K Restaurant; guest rooms; and multiple bedroom suites for bigger groups.

The Viceroy can add this to a list of accolades that include ranking on Conde Nast's best-hotels list for two straight years and a certificate of excellence from TripAdvisor, based on consistent outstanding guest reviews.

"It's really tremendous for us to be a

3-year-old hotel and receive recognition over and above some of the older (properties)," said Hugh Templeman, Viceroy Snowmass general manager.

Templeman credited the resort's building, team and the fact that it is "delivering on our customer promise" for the recognition.

Last year, the hotel's revenue was up 14 percent from 2011. Continued success is also meaningful for Viceroy condo owners, Templeman said.

It's also something for the community to celebrate, he said.

"It is really important that we in the community continue to celebrate our successes. To celebrate that the Westin has a new restaurant that's doing very well, to celebrate that 8K has amazing American cuisine" and is using local ingredients is important, he said.

There's always things a hotel can do better, but it's important to recognize that the Viceroy and Snowmass Village are doing some things right, he said.

"We (at the Viceroy) are doing something special already," Templeman said. "We're focused on it. We've got great people, and our people are local."

Other Aspen properties on the Colorado list are the St. Regis, the Hotel Jerome, and The Limelight. To see all the rankings go to http://travel.usnews.com.
