Aspen nordic center to host extravaganza

ASPEN - Interested in cross-country skiing? Want to brush up on technique with free lessons or try the latest in ski equipment? The Cross Country Ski Extravaganza, to take place Sunday at the Aspen Cross Country Center, is your chance.

Everything will be free, including food, demos, lessons waxing and a raffle. Equipment demos and rentals will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Both skating and classic equipment (boots, skis, poles and bindings) will be available from various vendors including Fischer, Alpina, Salomon, Swix and Toko. Rental demos will be available from the cross-country center. (A credit card security deposit will be required for all rentals and demos.)

One-hour lessons are scheduled at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. with instructors from the Aspen and Snowmass cross-country centers and Ashcroft Ski Touring. Each session will include lessons for beginner and intermediate levels in both skating and classic technique.

Food and drink will be provided by Red Mountain Grill, Cafe Ink, Louis Swiss Pastry and Paradise Bakery. Free ski waxing for track skis also will be offered. A small raffle at 2 p.m. will wrap up the day's activities. Children and families are encouraged to participate.

The Aspen Cross Country Center operates in the clubhouse at the Aspen Golf Club off Highway 82. It offers access to the 70 kilometers of free trails in the Aspen-Snowmass nordic system and is open daily during the winter season for those who wish to demo gear, take a lesson or head out on a guided tour. In addition to the retail shop and ski school, it offers ski tuning and repair services, a public waxing room and locker rooms.

The Ute Mountaineer owns and operates the Aspen Cross Country Center. Call 970-925-2145 for more information.
