Snow clobbers San Juans

ASPEN - Snow swept into Colorado Friday evening, but it was the southern San Juan Mountains that picked up the brunt of the snowfall.

The Aspen-Snowmass ski areas reported an inch or two of new snow by Saturday morning, while Wolf Creek in southwest Colorado reported 18 inches. Purgatory at Durango picked up 13 inches.

Sunlight Mountain Resort near Glenwood Springs had 5 inches in its morning report.

Snow showers remain in Aspen's forecast Saturday.

An avalanche warning is in effect for the southern San Juans Saturday, while avalanche risk in the Aspen area is rated considerable on north through southeast aspects above treeline and moderate elsewhere, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.
