Gunilla Asher named general manager of The Aspen Times

ASPEN - Gunilla Asher was named General Manager of The Aspen Times Thursday and will take over running the daily operations of all the newspaper's publications starting Jan. 9.

Asher previously worked for the Times delivering papers when she was growing up in Aspen, and in the past decade, worked as an ad director, regional ad manager and co-manager of the Times and its sister products, the Aspen Times Weekly and Snowmass Sun.

Co-manager Ryan Slabaugh will leave the paper on Jan. 8, according to Colorado Mountain News Media general manager Jim Morgan, and relocate to Chicago. Slabaugh had served as operations manager, editor-in-chief and co-manager in his two-plus years at the Times. He will be moving to Chicago to be closer to his family and long-time girlfriend, and take on the editor's role for three publications focused on agriculture and sustainability recently acquired by The Aspen Times' family-owned parent company.

"Working alongside Gunilla and this newsroom was a dream situation and I am very sad to be saying goodbye, but I know this is the right time to do this in my life," Slabaugh said. "If I had to say one thing to the community and our newsroom, it would be a sincere, 'Thank you'."

"I have learned so much from Ryan and I am sorry to see him leave," she said. "The priority now is looking forward to 2013. Our team is focused on continued service to the community by publishing Aspen's best newspaper."

Slabaugh was the editor of the Summit Daily News from 2006-2008, and the editor of several publications around Lake Tahoe from 2008-2010.

"We much appreciate the excellent work done by Ryan the past several years and while excited for his new opportunity will miss him as part of the Colorado team," said Morgan.

Asher said the search for a new editor of the Times is under way.
