I'd like to congratulate the community of Aspen and Aspen Skiing Co. for the incredible job they did of hosting the recent World Cup and NorAm races. The 2012 Aspen Winternational was by all accounts a resounding success and a truly world-class event.
We had the biggest crowds we've seen in years, and the positive energy was evident. Rising superstar Mikaela Shiffrin stated that the racers look forward to the Aspen event more than any other on the World Cup schedule.
Despite the challenging weather, Harry Lynk and his snowmakers, along with Joe Giampanolo and the Aspen Mountain groomers, were able to produce a course described by Lindsey Vonn as "perfect." World Cup racer Resi Steigler said it was the best World Cup course conditions "ever."
I'd like to thank Jim Hancock and his course crew, the ski pros and the multitudes of volunteers who made the event so special. I'd especially like to recognize the coaches of the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club who volunteered hundreds of hours during the event, ensuring that it was as well run as any race in the world. It is no coincidence that the club coaches are widely considered the best in the nation.
So congratulations, Aspen, on a job well done! We look forward to hosting the world's best ski racers again in the near future.
