Hans Lull

Longtime Aspen resident Hans Lull passed away peacefully in his home on Nov. 12, 2012.

Hans was born Jan. 27, 1932 and grew up near Danzig, Germany. His life forever changed as a result of World War II. His father was drafted to the Russian front in early 1945 and in April, he fled the onslaught of the Russian invasion of Eastern Germany with his mother and sister to Berlin. As Germany rebuilt, Hans followed his father's trade into the restaurant business and was drawn to the opportunities of America. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and later became a U.S. citizen.

Hans brought his wife, Christa, son Michael and daughter Stephanie to Aspen in 1965. In 1967, Hans and Christa opened the Golden Barrel at the Chateaux Kirk at Aspen Highlands. In 1972, he converted a Victorian residence in town and the Golden Barrel became an intimate dining experience. A local's favorite was the "Velvet Room" in the back. As is the case for most longtime Aspen locals, Aspen tugged on his heart and was always considered "home" regardless of his mailing address. Hans' love and appreciation of the freedom and bounty of America was a powerful theme in his life.

Hans is survived by his former wife and friend Christa, son Michael, daughter Stephanie, son-in-law Jack Wheeler IV, grandchildren Jessica (Adam) Robison and Jack Wheeler V, extended family and numerous friends he made in his travels.

He was often seen in the summer in the mountains in his favorite old Landcruiser camping and picnicking. He made it through post-war Germany thanks to the generosity of America and his wish would be that all of us remember to be generous to those less fortunate. He was a member of the Elks and his favorite charities include the Salvation Army, Lift Up and various veteran organizations.

An informal gathering will be held. Please email swheeler@rof.net if you would like to be notified of the date.
