SNOWMASS VILLAGE - At last - a happy hour event that dogs can enjoy as much as their owners.
Viceroy Snowmass is hosting Yappy Hour, a cocktail event featuring special menu items for both people and their canine companions, at the Nest on Oct. 11. The event is a fundraiser for the Aspen Animal Shelter, which will bring some dogs currently available for adoption.
Executive chef Will Nolan said he was excited when he was approached to do a menu for the event. His 14-year-old dog, Decatur, recently passed away, but he also just adopted a puppy that was on its way to the shelter.
"I'm a dog lover," he said. "I've had a dog forever. ... I love what shelters do."
For the puppies, Nolan has created Housemade Liver Snaps with liver, egg and wheat flour, as well as Bacon Biscuits with wheat flour, bacon, bacon fat, chicken and egg, which are an amenity made by pastry chef Ashley Jenkin for all the canine guests of the hotel. For people, Nolan will serve up his famous Hushpuppies, Tchoppers BBQ Rips, Wieners in a blanket and Decatur's Frisbee sliders. Jenkin is creating dogbone-shaped cookies.
Nolan will also prepare some beer-battered fish on a stick, made with a Louisiana beer called Turbodog. Nolan, who hails from New Orleans, said Decatur became a sort of mascot for that brewery while they were living there.
"They made her the mascot of the beer," he said. "Any restaurant I go to, I make sure we have Turbodog on tap. We cook with it, drink it."
Photography studio Exposed will offer pet portraits during Yappy Hour, and there will also be a costume contest with prizes for best dog and best dog and owner costumes. Viceroy Snowmass will also hand out the same leashes and bandanas given to dogs that stay at the hotel.
"I'm behind animal rights, and I'm behind taking care of animals," Nolan said. "It's offseason, a lot of people are hanging around, why not come check out some animals and do some good for your community."
