SNOWMASS VILLAGE - Related Cos. announced earlier this week that it submitted a building permit to complete a usable skier dropoff through Building 7, next to the Base Village parking garage on Carriage Way Road.
There is currently a gravel driveway with a chain across its entrance in front of the building, which was intended to operate as the "Arrival Center" but can't be properly accessed by the public today. The goal is to build an asphalt drive and make some interior improvements to the building so that drivers can drop off skiers at the site this winter, according to Dwayne Romero, president of Related Colorado.
Currently, drivers drop skiers off at locations up Carriage Way, including the mall and entrance to the Treehouse. One of the goals of the work is to take pressure "off traffic that accumulate up the street," Romero said.
The site will have a drive lane, dropoff points, and angled spaces for short-term parking. Improvements to the building will allow for pedestrians to go inside, access the garage and then take the escalator to Base Village plaza.
"We think it's an appropriate set of improvements," Romero said.
Related still hasn't closed on a deal to acquire the Base Village assets from its current owner, Snowmass BV Holdco LLC. Related received consent from the owner to submit the building permit ahead of closing.
Romero said the work will all be on the privately owned lot. He said the project is "relatively minor."
"The challenge is getting it done," he said.
Romero said the project should be completed close to Thanksgiving Day, the scheduled opening day for the Snowmass ski area.
