June weather in Aspen was unusually dry

ASPEN - Aspen saw rain on only two days during the month of June, and virtually all of it fell on a stormy Thursday evening last week.

According to weather data tracked by the Aspen Weather Department, 0.36 inches of precipitation was measured in the rain gauge at the water plant on Friday morning. The measurement was for the preceding 24 hours; Aspen saw its only real rain of the month during a June 28 downpour accompanied by impressive lightning.

On June 3, 0.01 inches was logged in the rain gauge, making the total for the month 0.37 inches.

Average precipitation for June is 1.27 inches, according to the water department. In addition, average snowfall in June is 0.82 inches, but no snowfall was recorded for the month this year. In fact, the last time snowfall was recorded at the water plant, at an elevation of 8,161 feet, was in June 2005, the department reported.

The high temperature for the month was 87.4 degrees, and the low was 30. The highest low temperature over a 24-hour period last month was 66 degrees.
