Around Aspen: ArtCrush 2011

The seventh annual ArtCrush, the summer benefit held in early August for the Aspen Art Museum, was the usual glitzy and glamorous affair with the ladies in their lovely summer dresses, the gentlemen so handsome in elegant suits and everyone sipping champagne or wine as they viewed the works of art in the big tents.

ArtCrush has morphed from one evening to three, which now include the art show and auction with cocktail hour and dinner on the grounds of the Aspen Art Museum, a wine pairing dinner at the home of museum partons, John and Amy Phelan, and a preview party at the Baldwin Gallery. The three-event bash this year brought in $l.7 million compared to $1.5 million last summer. The museum is $44 million into a $50 million fundraising goal for a new building and an endowment. The new museum will go up on the land formerly occupied by the Wienerstube Restaurant.

Don't take a deep breath yet ... there are still some more grand parties in the offing.

The Aspen Historical Society will hold its annual Old-Timers Party on Saturday, Sept. 3, starting at 4 p.m. at the Inn at Aspen at Buttermilk. The event features a barbeque and music by Walt Smith and his band (that includes dancing). Call the society at 925-3721 to see if you finally have lived here long enough to be an Old-Timer.

The Save the Land Dance, given by the Aspen Valley Land Trust, will be held the next Saturday, Sept. 10, at 5:30 p.m. at the Tybar Ranch in Carbondale. Tickets are $75 and reservations can be made by calling 963-8440.

Undercurrent ... So many of the second-home owners in our neighborhood left last Sunday, Aug. 14, to return to their primary homes because their kids had to start school on Aug. 15. I liked it when school didn't start until the day after Labor Day!
