Basalt lands grant to baffle shooting range

BASALT - Basalt residents who are disturbed by noise from the state shooting range by Lake Christine are bound to get some relief this summer thanks to local fundraising and a grant from the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

The wildlife division awarded the town $114,350 for sound mitigation at the shooting range, the town government disclosed Friday. Another $49,000 was raised locally to cover the cost of the $163,000 project.

A consultant advised the town to place three-sided enclosures on the pistol and rifle shooting platforms at the range. That will baffle the noise from the firing of guns and provide relief for residents of Southside and Elk Run, where the sound ricochets off surround hills, said Brian McNellis, a planner for the town of Basalt.

"I think it's going to do a lot of good," McNellis said. "This isn't a foolproof solution. We still have the shotgun range."

An enclosure won't work at the shotgun range because users are often firing at clay pigeons. The town government has asked the wildlife division to keep looking into possible solutions for that section of the shooting range.

The town will invite contractors to bid on the enclosure project. The enclosures will be pre-fabricated and placed at the range. The work will have to be coordinated with the wildlife division, McNellis said, but it is likely to take place in June or July.

Basalt was required to provide at least 25 percent of the overall cost of the project, or $40,000, to qualify for the grant. It exceeded its goal by raising: $20,000 from Basalt town government; $10,000 from Eagle County's Community Improvement Projects fund; $7,500 from Pitkin County; $5,000 from the Wilds housing development; $5,000 from Alpine Bank; $1,000 from the Southside subdivision; and $600 from the Elks Club.

The $114,350 came from the Colorado Division of Wildlife Shooting Range Grant Program.
