SNOWMASS VILLAGE — Though no remains of woolly mammoths have been found near Snowmass Village, the Town Council will take up a resolution Monday proclaiming jam band Widespread Panic's “Big Woolly Mammoth” as the town's official song.

Councilman Reed Lewis, an admitted Widespread fan (though not as devout as a Spreadhead, he clarified), proposed the musical acknowledgment of the prehistoric animals that have been discovered at Ziegler Reservoir. Monday is his final council meeting, as he did not seek re-election Nov. 2, and voting on the song as one of his last official acts struck Lewis as a fun, light-hearted thing to do.

Plus, Widespread Panic has played Jazz Aspen Snowmass twice, and there apparently are no popular songs about Columbian mammoths — the variety unearthed at the reservoir.

“I just thought it was a fun thing more than anything else,” Lewis said. “It's just to remind us we're a fun mountain town.

“I think Widespread fans will get a kick out of it.”
