ASPEN - The weather over the next week will determine if the top of Aspen Mountain will be available for lift-served skiing on Memorial Day weekend, Aspen Skiing Co. spokesman Jeff Hanle said Monday.
The Skico has groomed the fresh snow that fell on the mountaintop over the last few weeks to keep options open, Hanle said. But skiing probably won't be an option if the weather remains as warm as it was Monday, he cautioned.
A decision probably won't be made until Tuesday, May 25. If skiing can be accommodated, it would be Saturday through Monday, May 29-31. The Silver Queen Gondola would be used to download customers.
The forecast from the National Weather Service looks favorable over the next few days. There is a winter advisory for the Aspen-area, and higher elevations of Colorado's central mountains are supposed to receive 4 to 8 inches of snow Tuesday night and Wednesday. Sunny skies and temperatures in the 50s will return starting Friday.
