A Tuesday morning fire cause damage to the building and inventory at Carpet One in Glenwood Springs.
GLENWOOD SPRINGS — An early Tuesday morning fire caused extensive damage to Carpet One of Glenwood Springs on Glen Avenue.
The Glenwood Springs Fire Department arrived at the south Glenwood business about 5 a.m. to find a tandem axle utility trailer engulfed in flames.
The trailer was considered a total loss, and the contents of the Carpet One facility suffered major smoke damage, according to a fire department press release.
According to the store's owner, John Crump, the trailer was used to haul trash, such as carpet scraps and other flooring installation materials.
Crump said an employee of a nearby business arriving at work earlier spotted the fire and notified officials. Crump was contacted by the fire department, and he arrived in time to see the flames extinguished.
“There was nothing I could do but watch them put it out,” Crump said.
Fire Captain Gary Tillotson said it took firefighters only about five minutes to knock down the 15-foot flames, but it took the eight-person fire crew another hour to fully extinguish the fire, which spread to the building's walls and ceiling.
“The damage [to the building] was not so much by the fire, but from the smoke,” Crump said. “It permeated the whole building.”
Crump, who has owned the business for 32 years, also owns the building and does have fire insurance that should cover the repairs.
He said that he thought the building's entire roof and most of the interior would have to be replaced, along with a majority of the carpet in stock at the store.
“Every bit of carpet in the store is damaged,” he said. “We will have no samples. Anything soft — draperies, carpet — is gone.”
However, he said the store would remain open for business during repairs, as long as he can find a temporary facility from which to operate.
“We are negotiating for another spot to operate on a temporary basis,” he said.
While most people may look at their business being damaged by fire as a negative way to start the week, Crump said that he's looking at the positive aspect.
“It's what we call a glitch,” Crump said. “We can take a negative perspective on it, but when we re-open we are going to be shiny and new, which is something we should have done for a while now.”
The fire restricted access to 27th Street and closed one westbound lane of South Glen Avenue for about an hour. No other businesses or vehicles were damaged by the fire.
Crump said fire investigators were at the location Monday afternoon; the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
