MESA COUNTY, Colo. — Traffic will be stopped in both directions on Interstate 70 Thursday in Debeque Canyon while crews conduct rock fall mitigation.
The interstate will be temporarily closed between mile points 55.2 and 55.8 in the canyon, located in western Colorado, east of Palisade. The closure will take place between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The work is being done as a preventative measure following a small rock fall on Tuesday, during which several boulders that were about 3 feet in diameter came down onto the interstate early in the morning. CDOT geologists determined that a larger rock, measuring about 3 by 5 feet, should be brought down.

Before traffic is stopped completely, there will be right-lane closures beginning at 8:30 a.m. in preparation for the work. Both east- and west-bound traffic will be reduced to a single lane for about 4.5 miles starting at 8:30 a.m.
