SNOWMASS VILLAGE — Fanny Hill at Snowmass is the place to be on Friday afternoons, starting this week, when Big Air Fridays returns for another run.
The weekly event continues through April 2, drawing amateur and pro riders and skiers from around the Roaring Fork Valley and beyond to compete for a weekly prize purse and series points that determine the overall winner at the end of the eight-week contest.
For spectators, Big Air Fridays promises plenty of aerial action off the 40-foot jump, located on Fanny Hill across from the mall, and, invariably, some spectacular spills. Plus, there are free giveaways for the crowd, music and the après-ski scene.
Registration takes place from 12:30-1:45 p.m. on Fanny Hill, next to the jump. There's a $20 entry fee (and minors must bring a signed waiver).
Practice occurs from 1-1:45 p.m., followed by the competition from 2-3 p.m. A panel of judges chooses four skiers and boarders to compete in the final — each gets one jump and will be ranked by the judges, who determine which competitors throw down the best tricks. Money and series points are awarded to the winners.
The weekly purse is $300 for first place, $150 for second and $75 for third. After the final competition, the overall points winners in both the ski and snowboard divisions take home $500.
