Authorities say lost Targhee skier died from hypothermia

JACKSON, Wyo. - Authorities say a New York man who got lost while skiing at Grand Targhee Resort has died from hypothermia.

The Teton County Wyo. Sheriff Department identified the skier Wednesday as 46-year-old Edward Fitzgerald, from Forest Hills, N.Y.

Officials say Fitzgerald got lost Tuesday night while skiing off the back side of Grand Targhee, ultimately getting lost in the South Leigh Creek area.

Authorities say Fitzgerald called a sheriff dispatcher in Idaho to report he had skied outside the boundary and had a global positioning device but didn't know how to use it.

Search and rescue teams from both states failed to find him Tuesday night. They resumed Wednesday morning, finding him in a canyon unconscious and unresponsive.

Fitzgerald was pronounced dead at St. John's Medical Center in Jackson.
