VAIL, Colo. - When Austrian coaches inferred Lindsey Vonn's weight gave her an advantage over other skiers, the reigning World Cup champ used it as motivation and dominated in the races held in Haus im Ennstal, Austria, earlier this month.
"I just think it's pretty ridiculous, and it definitely irritated me and definitely gave me a little bit of extra motivation on race day," Vonn said during a teleconference last week.
Likewise, when Edwards resident Nancy Gage heard about the disparaging remarks, she used it as motivation to spur Vonn on - writing song lyrics set to Frank Sinatra's classic "The Lady is a Tramp."
"Women, especially, do not like people making slams about their weight," Gage said. "[Lindsey] must've thought, 'Oh I'll show you,' and I thought good for her."
Gage's husband, apres musician Allan Finney, and local pianist/singer Tony Gulizia, have performed the song, called "Vail's Lindsey is a Champ" at their gig at the Cascade Resort in Vail a few times. With the help of KZYR morning show host Steve Leigh, the duo recorded the song in the Edwards radio station's studio Friday morning.
"We tweeted about it at KZYR, and 45 minutes later, Lindsey Vonn's on her Twitter page," Leigh said. "She was saying 'love the song, thanks guys.'"
Vonn's hearing the song is "all we could've hoped for," Finney said.
"It looks like it has legs. It's cute, and not to be taken too seriously," he continued.
KZYR also posted footage they filmed of the musicians recording in the studio, interspersed with racing footage of Vonn, on YouTube on Saturday.
