ASPEN — Aspen is under a winter storm warning, in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday, but only light snow had fallen in town through late afternoon on Monday.

The National Weather Service is calling for about an inch of accumulation Monday, and 3 to 5 inches Monday night, with lows of 5 below to 5 above. Another 3 to 5 inches is forecast Tuesday, with highs of 5 to 15 and south winds of 10 to 15 mph, shifting to the southwest in the afternoon with gusts to around 40 mph. Wind-chill readings on Tuesday of 5 to 15 below are expected.

The weather service is predicting another 1 to 3 inches of snow Tuesday night in the Aspen area, with lows of 5 below to 5 above. On Wednesday, snow is likely, with accumulations of 2 to 4 inches and highs of 5 to 15, along with gusty winds and wind-chill readings of 9 to 19 below.

The forecast for Thursday though Saturday calls for mostly cloudy skies and a 30 percent chance of snow, with highs in the 20s and lows of zero to 10 above.

The Aspen Skiing Co. was reporting 2 inches of new snow at both Snowmass and Aspen Highlands on Monday morning, and an inch at Aspen Mountain and Buttermilk. Only Snowmass and Aspen Mountain are currently open; Highlands and Buttermilk open Saturday. On Sunday morning, the Skico reported an inch of new snow at Snowmass.

Elsewhere around the state, the weather service has issued a blizzard warning for the west Elk Mountains, including Crested Butte and Marble, and is predicting blowing snow and 5 to 10 inches of snow on Monday night, plus another 4 to 7 inches on Tuesday.

A blizzard warning was also issued for the northwest San Juan Mountains, including Telluride, where 6 to 12 inches is expected Monday night and another 5 to 10 inches is possible Tuesday.
