ASPEN — Aspen rescuers came to the aid of a Louisiana teenager who became ill while hiking on the Snowmass Creek Trail west of Aspen Monday evening.
The Pitkin County Sheriff's Office received a 911 a report of a hiker suffering altitude sickness at about 8:30 p.m. The call came via a satellite phone. A 17-year-old girl, from Baton Rouge, was complaining of a severe headache, dehydration and nausea, according to the sheriff's office.
Mountain Rescue Aspen sent out search party at about 9:30 p.m. The trailhead is located about 11 miles west of Aspen in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Area.
At 10:45 p.m, the ill hiker arrived at the trailhead with members of her own hiking party and members of the rescue team. She was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital at about 11:30 a.m. Her condition was not life-threatening, the sheriff's office said.
The incident was declared over at about midnight.
