ASPEN — Open space on mid-Smuggler Mountain, adjacent to Aspen, will be closed Thursday while felled trees are being moved by a helicopter.
Crews are cutting 202 trees, infested with mountain pine beetles, on the open space this week.
Smuggler Mountain Road will be closed 1 mile up from its intersection with Park Circle, allowing mountain bikers and pedestrians to use the lower road (the viewing platform is about 1.5 miles up the road). Vehicular traffic is discouraged though, as turning around a vehicle at the closure will be difficult.
Smuggler Mountain will be open to the public for the Fourth of July weekend.
