PITKIN COUNTY — Pitkin County is making $26,500 available to help landowners pay for control of noxious weed on their properties.
The funds come from several sources, including the Aspen Skiing Co.'s Environment Foundation ($2,000), the Colorado Department of Agriculture ($7,000), and the Pitkin County general fund ($17,500).
All landowners in unincorporated Pitkin County are eligible for the program. Funds will be awarded on a reimbursement basis. Landowners who perform the work themselves can be reimbursed for 75 percent of their material costs. Those who hire a professional are eligible for reimbursement of half the invoiced cost.
Chemical, mechanical, cultural (revegetation) and biological treatments are all eligible for the program, provided they comply with the Pitkin County Noxious Weed Management Plan.
Special priority will be given to infestations of oxeye daisy in the Crystal River watershed, and to noxious weeds slated for eradication by the county management plan.
In order to receive reimbursement, landowners must submit valid 2009 receipts for purchased materials and/or services and a complete application form (available online at www.aspenpitkin.com/weeds). A pre-application site visit by the county land manager, Crystal Yates-White, is also required.
