Rodeo action returns to Snowmass Village on Wednesday evenings this summer.
SNOWMASS VILLAGE — Rodeo fans who turn out Wednesday for the first event of the season at the Snowmass Rodeo grounds will find discounted tickets, a new configuration of tents, a children's hayride and, possibly, some fresh faces riding bulls and broncs.
“We definitely expect to see some new people this year,” said Chris Kelly, executive director of the Snowmass Western Heritage Association, the group that operates the weekly summertime rodeo.
Also new this season is the location of the entrance facility, as well as the positioning of the food and bar tents, which Kelly said allow guests to watch the festivities even when the weather is inclement.
Announcers Mike Land and Arnie Mordkin have returned for another season.
Rodeos will take place June 17 through Aug. 19. The main events — bareback and saddle bronc riding, bull riding, barrel racing, team roping and ribbon roping — begin at 7 p.m. and wrap up at about 8:30 p.m. The gates open at 5 p.m. for pre-rodeo fun, including hayrides and pony rides for $10 each, mechanical bull rides for $7, singing with resident cowboy Twirp Anderson, a petting zoo and shopping at on-site booths featuring everything from jewelry to clothing to toys.
A barbecue dinner, served by the Hickory House in Aspen ($18) also begins at 5 p.m. A sandwich package is available for $9.
Entrance tickets on June 17 are $12 for adults. For the remainder of the season, adult tickets are $18; admission is $10 for youths, ages 11-15, and free to children age 10 and younger. VIP seating is $25 for adults and $15 for youths. Tickets are available at the gate, or call (970) 923-8898.
