EAGLE COUNTY Eagle County government doled out $817,000 in community service grants this week, including several to organization and programs in the mid-Roaring Fork Valley.
The county had to reduce the amount of grants by about 10 percent from the 2008 level because of tough economic times.
We looked for programs that best leveraged our public dollars, for programs which reinforced county services, or programs that helped reinforce the social safety for local families during these very hard times, said Eagle County Commissioner Jon Stavney.
There were 40 grant applications requesting more than $2 million in funding. Unfortunately, many groups were funded at lower levels than requested, Stavney said.
The groups or programs that were funded in the Roaring Fork Valley portion of Eagle County include:
Wyly Art Center, $2,000; Basalt High School Project Graduation, $1,000; town of Basalt, Basalsa Days, $6,000; Mid Valley Trails, $25,000; Basalt Family Center, $5,000; Mountain Valley Developmental Services, $20,000; the Buddy Program, $7,000; Aspen Camp School for the Deaf, $1,500; Basalt School Health Center, $15,000; and Access Roaring Fork, $5,000.
