The Aspen winter season has begun — with snowfalls deep and white!

The staff at the Hotel Jerome recently celebrated the reopening of The Library and The Century Room, which had been closed for a year. Chef Christopher Keating welcomed everyone and Dave Dyer played holiday music for the festive occasion.

December wouldn’t be December without Klaus Obermeyer’s birthday party. Because the gondola was closed due to wind damage, the party was held this year at the Ajax Tavern. But there was the usual strudl birthday cake with lots and lots of whipped cream.

The holiday parties are beginning — at the Hotel Jerome, the Caribou Club, the Doerr-Hosier Center, the Little Nell, the St. Regis, the Mountain Chalet, Jimmy’s ... just all over town.

Ron Krajian will be in town for the holidays. During the offseasons and most of winter he visits Hawaii and stays in the California desert; he spends the summer in Aspen.

A friend recently gave me a copy of “The Independent: Kansas City’s Weekly Journal of Society” and there on a page of patron photos from the Kansas City Ballet was Jeff Bentley, who was director of Dance Aspen during the 1980s and early 1990s. Jeff is now with the Kansas City Ballet.

Undercurrent ... All the parties and festivities of the holidays were probably started to take our minds off the short days and early dark of winter. But it is already Dec. 21, the shortest day of the year, and from now on the days get longer.
