ASPEN The Aspen Summit for Life uphill race on Aspen Mountain returns Saturday, Dec. 6, but first its time to party.
The kickoff party for the annual race will take place Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Cantina, at the corner of Mill and Main streets in downtown Aspen. Party time is 5:30-8 p.m.
Thursdays festivities will feature live music from local musicians Brad Manosevitz and Jeremy Fleisher, complimentary food and drink, and an opportunity to register for the race or sign up as a volunteer. Attendees can also meet Aspen Olympian Chris Klug and register as an organ or tissue donor. The race benefits the Chris Klug Foundation, an organization focused on promoting organ donation and supporting transplant candidates and recipients.
As for the actual race new this year are different start times for the fast and not-so-fast competitors. A 5 p.m. recreational start is for those who anticipate taking more than two hours to reach the summit. A 6 p.m. competitive start is for those who expect to finish in less than two hours.
Racers may use their preferred choice of lighting and non-motorized equipment snowshoes, skins, etc.
Competitors climb 3,267 feet over the 2.5-mile trek from the base to the summit. At the top, participants can revive themselves at the Sundeck, where a dinner, refreshments, live music and an awards party are planned.
Those who want to party at the Sundeck, but have no desire to haul themselves up the mountain on foot, can ride up on the gondola. The party price for noncompetitors is $60 for adults and $35 for children (kids 3 and younger can attend for free). A portion of each ticket is tax deductible.
The fee to register for the race is $40; in addition, competitors are expected to raise additional pledges toward the cause.
