GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Mesa County has purchased a contoversial piece of ground at the base of Mt. Garfield, the distinctive buttress that rises above Grand Junction, on the northeast edge of the Grand Valley.
County commissioners agreed Monday to pay $215,000 to acquire the land from Jim Leany, who had threatened earlier this year to sell it to an energy support company.
At one point, Leany was asking $800,000 for the two parcels, totaling 47.82 acres. County records show Leany’s Depot Preservation LLC bought the land less than three years ago for $57,000.
On Monday, Leany thanked the commissioners for “stepping up” and making “the right deal” on the property.
“We were waiting for the right deal on that property,” Leany said.
Like Commissioner Craig Meis, Leany said he “didn’t want to see a damn thing on this property either.”
The land borders Interstate 70 and is at the base of Mt. Garfield.
