Man rescued off Holy Cross

Print Comment
EAGLE COUNTY — A Fort Collins man was rescued off Mount of the Holy Cross Saturday evening.

Robert Smith, 22, became separated from his hiking partner on Angelica Couloir on Saturday morning, according to the Eagle County Sheriff's Office. He continued hiking and later found himself on a ledge, authorities said.

He considered the ledge dangerous and decided to stay there and call 911, according to police.

The rescue mission began at 10:24 a.m., and Smith was rescued at about 7:30 p.m.

Volunteers from the Vail Mountain Rescue Group rappelled 450 feet down to reach Smith.

A Blackhawk helicopter flown by pilots from the Colorado National Guard High Altitude Aviation Training Center helped with the rescue.

The 14,005-foot Holy Cross is Eagle County's only fourteener.
