Carbondale a cover town

Magazine features 'Where to Live & Play Now: The 50 Next Great Towns'

CARBONDALE — The town of Carbondale has made the cover of a national publication for an article titled, “Where to Live & Play Now: The 50 Next Great Towns.”

The magazine, National Geographic Adventure, went out to subscribers last week and is to be on newsstands next week, according to Randi Lowenthal, director of the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce.

The article cites a number of cities and towns around the country for their outdoor recreational and adventure possibilities, and Carbondale ranks third on the list on the cover, after Missoula, Mont., and San Francisco, and ahead of Boston, Hood River, Ore., San Antonio, Texas, and Seattle.

The cover photo shows a couple lounging around a Jeep in a field of wildflowers and greenery, with a mountain bike peeping out from behind the vehicle and with the iconic image of Mount Sopris looming in the background.

Lowenthal said she first heard several months ago that Carbondale was on the list when local photographer Tyler Stableford called to say he was submitting photos to the magazine and that “Carbondale was being considered at that time.”

Stableford, according to his website, is the winner of five 2007 Picture of the Year awards and, in 2005, was named by Men’s Journal as one of the “world’s greatest adventure photographers.”

Lowenthal said that, in response to Stableford’s call, the Chamber sent “a lot of information about Carbondale” to the magazine’s editors to promote the town’s chances of making the final cut, and then heard nothing for a while.

The next she knew, she said, was when Carbondale recreation director Jeff Jackal brought the copy of the magazine that had arrived in his mailbox.

“From a tourism perspective, it’s wonderful to have great PR for Carbondale,” she said, adding cautiously, “Hopefully, it doesn’t bring too many people to town. … Whatever too many is.”
