Music school construction schedule set

Print Comment
ASPEN — Construction at the Aspen Music Festival and School campus on Castle Creek Road will begin in the fall of 2009, according to an announcement issued Thursday.

AMFS President and CEO Alan Fletcher said the decision was made in consultation with Aspen Country Day School Headmaster John Suitor. Fletcher explained that the intervening year will allow both organizations to refine their plans for financing the project, estimated to cost $60 million, as well as to finalize construction details.

The 23-acre campus, located a mile up Castle Creek Road south of Aspen, is to be completely redeveloped, with only three buildings to be retained — two from Aspen’s heyday as a mining town and one of “more recent” vintage, according to a statement from the music school.

The site also is to be renamed the Matthew and Carolyn Bucksbaum Campus, in recognition of a $25 million donation by the Bucksbaums.

The campus has been home to the music school, which owns the land and uses the facilities in the summer months, for 42 years. Aspen Country Day, a prep school offering classes in prekindergarten through eighth grade, has rented the campus for wintertime use for 38 years. Both institutions will occupy the campus during construction, which is be accomplished in three phases lasting up to five years.
