Austrian chef joins Aspen's Wienerstube

ASPEN — The Wienerstube Restaurant will continue to stay committed to its Austrian roots.

Harald Neuweg, an Austrian chef from South Florida, will take over the kitchen at the restaurant in Aspen starting July 15.

Neuweg will carry on the traditions of the Wienerstube, which was established in 1965 by Gerhard Mayritsch and Helmut Schloffer, two Austrian chefs.

Kevin Wilson, current owner of the ’Stube, recently recruited Neuweg as the chef and manager of the restaurant. Five years ago, Wilson and his wife Laura, who also own the Wienerstube Basalt and the Woody Creek Tavern, took over Aspen’s Wienerstube.

“We have been searching for a person like Harald Neuweg for a very long time, and we are both thrilled to have brought him on board and confident that our partnership will result in great improvements to the Wienerstube and in broadening our service to our customers,” Wilson said in a press release. “We believe that Harald, his energy and his creations will be a great addition to the Aspen restaurant scene.”

Neuweg, who originally hails from St. Agatha in upper Austria, has been a Miami resident for 28 years.

Neuweg also owns the Fritz & Franz Bierhaus, a Austrian/German restaurant in Coral Gables, Fla. He also is founder of several annual festivals in South Florida — Oktoberfest, BluesFest, PaellaFest and the BarbequeFest — as well an authentic Austrian restaurant, the Mozart Stube.
