BASALT Motorists on Highway 82 can expect delays in the El Jebel area for the next few months because of a resurfacing project, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
Work began Monday on a $3.7 million resurfacing between milepost 17.5 and milepost 21. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane through the work zones during nonpeak traffic periods, CDOT said in a statement. There will not be any closures or construction activities in the upvalley lanes between 6:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. and in the downvalley lanes between 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The project, which includes installation of guardrails, improved signage and pavement markings, will be completed in the fall. Construction will take place during daylight hours, possibly including some weekends. The speed in the work zones will be reduced to 35 miles per hour.
The resurfacing will include a 1-inch leveling course of asphalt that will be overlaid with another 2 inches of asphalt. The contract was awarded to Elam Construction of Grand Junction.
