Noize and ’Sounds coming to Jazz Aspen



ASPEN — Jazz Aspen Snowmass has added several acts, including Global Noize and the New Mastersounds, to its summer festival lineup. Also added to the schedule are Anita Baker, the Manhattan Transfer, Xavier Rudd and the Christian McBride Situation.

Global Noize, a boundary-crossing mix of hip-hop, jazz and electronica, will make its local debut Aug. 28 at the Labor Day Festival, opening for Widespread Panic. The group, headed by keyboardist Jason Miles and turntablist DJ Logic, will release its self-titled debut CD Tuesday, April 29.

The New Mastersounds, a British groove-jazz group, is set to play Aug. 29, also opening for Widespread Panic. Joining them on the bill is Australian singer and multi-instrumentalist Xavier Rudd.

Previously announced artists for the Labor Day Festival include headliners John Fogerty and Colorado’s Yonder Mountain String Band, and opening acts Dwight Yoakam and Jerry Douglas. An additional headliner is still to be announced. The Labor Day Festival is set for Aug. 28 to Sept. 1 at Snowmass Town Park in Snowmass Village.

Anita Baker makes her local debut, headlining Jazz Aspen’s June Festival on June 20. The R&B singer, an eight-time Grammy Award winner, returned after a decade away from the studio with 2004’s “My Everything.” The vocal group the Manhattan Transfer will open for Baker.

The Christian McBride Situation will appear June 22 at the June Festival, opening for Tex-Mex rock band, Los Lonely Boys. The Situation is led by bassist Christian McBride, the artistic director of Jazz Aspen’s JAS Academy summer sessions educational program.

Other previously announced acts for the June Festival include headliners Dianne Reeves and the Brian Setzer Orchestra, and opening acts Bebel Gilberto and Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings. Appearing in the festival’s free Sunday gospel show June 22 is the Davell Crawford Movement. The June Festival is set for June 19-22 in Aspen’s Rio Grande Park.

Also, Jazz Aspen’s annual summer benefit event, JASummerNight Swing, is set for July 24 at Belly Up, and will feature the Blues Brothers. The event is a fundraiser for Jazz Aspen’s educational programs.
