Dear Editor:
Joel Stoningtons article in the Monday, March 17, edition of The Aspen Times (Red Brick Council says they need more art) contained language that suggests the Aspen Art Museum (AAM) walked away from its space in the Red Brick Arts and Recreation Center voluntarily. As such, we feel there is a need to clarify any misconceptions the article may have raised.
I was the point person in discussions and negotiations with the Red Brick Board of Trustees and the director on the status of our space one that we had used for both arts education and public programming for 17 years. The fact is that the AAM vacated , moved out of the Red Brick only after the renewal of our lease was denied. We support the notion that space for arts, artists and arts education within Aspen is essential and a core value of our community. We would have gladly continued to partner with the Red Brick toward that end.
