Xcel looks to boost wind power

DENVER — Xcel Energy is a top provider of electricity generated by the wind. Now, it wants to add even more.

The Minneapolis-based utility on Thursday issued a request for bids to provide 150 megawatts of wind-generated electricity. Companies have until April 11 to submit bids to Xcel — the largest utility in Colorado.

Xcel is working to comply with a state law that requires large utilities to generate at least 20 percent of electricity from renewable resources by 2020.

One megawatt of wind-generated electricity can serve about 400 households.

Xcel already has about 2,900 megawatts of wind power in its system.
