Angry white men, and women, speak

dotComments

Aspen Times Weekly columnist Gary Hubbell touched a nerve with his Feb. 9 column, “In election 2008, don’t forget Angry White Man.”

Hubbell described a bloc of voters that, he says, is angry and will hand Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton a defeat if she is the party’s candidate in November. The column has, apparently, circulated widely over the Internet and drew dozens of online comments last week, including many from people who agreed with Hubbell’s viewpoint.

There was this, for example:

An excellent and accurate article. Actually, I hope Hillary is the Democrat candidate for the reasons mentioned. I think she will be much easier to beat than Obama. She is dispicable as is her weasly husband.

Special interest groups abound, except for the middle class white guy who is exactly as Gary Hubbell describes: too honest, hard working and involved in his family, community and job to demand any special consideration. He is a giver, not a taker.

When will politicians realize Illegal Immigration and Securing The Border are burning issues with this group of Americans? I guess it is not politically correct?

And this:

The best, and most honest article I've read from any newspaper in years!!

I’m sending it to everyone I know so they can see that FINALLY someone has enough guts to point out who REAL Americans are and that they DO vote!!

Thanks so much for putting it in writing!

Offered another:

I’m an angry white woman who has worked all her life to support three children - without, I might add, welfare, food stamps or other government giveaways and resent the 300 billion tax dollars going to illegals, the stimulous package for people who took out loans they knew they couldn't afford, people who build houses on the beach knowing they can be swept away then expect someone else to build them back up - and I’m really pissed off at having to press one for English!

But, there was also this:

Hubbell’s article could have been titled “Don’t Forget the Dinosaurs. Angry white men? Please.

How about frustrated know nothings - nobody cares if you can weld a bumper of if you belong to the National Handgun Association, and, your pick up trucks will soon be rusting alongside the SUVs that have so helped our national energy picture.

The article is replete with code words for people who are racist, who are sexist, who are homophobic, who are intolerant and who pose as defenders of “family values” yet support an unjust war and a President who never served.

I’m an angry white man - and I’m angry at the intolerant bigots who Hubbell postures as “real men”.

Hillary Clinton is a threat because she might prove that women can do a better job (again) than a white guy in a suit, a white guy who drives a pickup truck, owns a gun and can clear brush like...that’s the real issue with Angry White Men: insecurity. Take away the guns, the trucks, and the attitude and where are they?

And on the immigrants, unless you are a native American, all the angry white men were immigrants. Who got here first doesn’t count, because if you can’t compete there’s always someone who can. Deal with it!

And, there was this observation, starting with a quote from Hubbell’s column:

“He’s not a racist, but he is annoyed and disappointed when people of certain backgrounds exhibit behavior that typifies the worst stereotypes of their race”

This is by far the most ironic portion of this terribly reasoned article. I wonder if the author realizes that by his own reasoning, he hates himself. The angry white man is the stereotypical white male; the worst of his own race.

Green ‘freak show’

Last week’s report on the Aspen City Council’s discussion of legislation to make construction more environmentally friendly and make developers and residents accountable for how much energy they use, “Aspen mandate: green, lean and clean” (Feb. 13), also spurred comment among online readers. There was this, for example:

liberal socialist bastards - can’t wait till these lunatics are no longer in office.

And this:

Jesus, what an out-of-control freak show.

Welcome to micro-management, hell, Aspen.

Enjoy the ride.

That produced this response:

What a joke. The home buyers in Aspen have been raping the enviroment for decades by purchasing brand new homes and then tearing part of that home out and throwing it into the trash so miss housewife can keep busy with the remodel.

To the previous poster, you obviously don't know anything about Aspen.

There was also this:

Who the heck is the town government to tell me how much electricity I can use in my own home ... and then to penalize me for doing so! I pay my bills like everyone else, the heck with them if I don't want to contribute to a “green” fund for something that won’t even help affect the environment - people shouldn’t be forced to do this.

Finally, there was this:

Good for the city council! It’s the right thing to do.

But, in addition to a fee based system, you need to get to the crux of the problem which is size and building techniques. You should NOT be able to buy yourself out of energy efficiency and certain things (like heated streets) should be illegal.
