Basalt man's Super Bowl sign says it all
You saw the sign at the end of the game, but did you know a local was holding it?

BASALT — Rob Mobilian came up with the perfect sign for the New England Patriots’ imperfect season.
Mobilian, a Basalt resident and diehard New York Giants fan, was in the stands at the Super Bowl on Sunday night and was captured on national television right after the game holding up a sign that said it all — 18-1.
It was a searing image for Patriots fans, whose team was heavily favored to improve to 19-0, making it only the second National Football League team to go undefeated for the entire course of a season. Mobilian’s message delighted fans of the underdog Giants.
Mobilian, who attended the game in Glendale, Ariz., with Garrett Reuss of Basalt, said he woke up on the morning of the game trying to think of a sign that would get him on TV and noticed by his family and friends.
“It just came to me, 18-1,” he said. The sign also had the symbol of his beloved Giants.
Mobilian and Reuss were sitting about 20 rows up in one end zone, but occasionally ran down to the front row to wave their sign. It rankled Patriots’ fans, but most of them took it in stride.
“One time the security guard told me to put it down because it was causing a riot,” Mobilian said.
He was confident with his prognostication even when the Pats took the lead with about two minutes left in the game. After a dramatic comeback by the Giants and a final desperate attempt by the Patriots, Mobilian proudly held up the sign and was featured for several seconds while a Fox TV camera panned through the crowd. He and Reuss were laughing and soaking up the moment.
The sign was in high demand as soon as the cliffhanger was over.
“Everybody wanted their picture taken with it,” Mobilian said. That included the security guard who earlier had told him to put it down.
Mobilian and Reuss couldn’t get out of the stadium without people stopping them, laughing with them and borrowing the sign for their own photos. Rob’s cell phone constantly rang with calls from friends in Colorado who spotted him on TV.
Back in Basalt, Rob’s wife Beth and their friends erupted in a cheer when they spotted the duo with their sign. They froze the image on their TV and took pictures with cell phone cameras. It’s an image that Patriots’ fans will want to forget.
