ASPEN Its not part of the recommended workout regimen for a race up Aspen Mountain, but it is an excuse to party. And sign up for the race.
There will be a kickoff party for the second annual Aspen Summit for Life race formerly known as Storm the Stars from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the Cantina in Aspen.
This years race, on Dec. 1, will benefit the Chris Klug Foundation and the American Transplant Foundation. The party offers a chance to register for the race (charging 3,267 vertical feet up Aspen Mountain in the dark might sound more appealing after a couple of cocktails) or volunteer for the event. At the very least, attendees may register as organ or tissue donors while taking advantage of the free food and drink. Klug, a local Olympian and liver transplant recipient, will be on hand.
Summit for Life is a nighttime race from the base of Aspen Mountain to the summit the aforementioned 3,267 vertical feet over 2.5 miles. Racers start at 6 p.m., using their preferred choice of lighting (presumably a headlamp) and nonmotorized gear (snowshoes, skins, etc.)
Dinner, refreshments, live music and an awards party await competitors at the Sundeck up top. Theres a $40 registration fee to race; participants are also expected to raise at least an additional $160 in pledges. Racers are urged to raise as much money as they can for the cause; top fundraisers will win great prizes, organizers promise.
Supporters who cant bring themselves to race/trudge to the summit can partake in the festivities atop Aspen Mountain by signing up to Ride for Life and take the gondola up. Tickets to the party cost $60 for adults and $35 for children; tots age 3 and younger ride for free. A portion of each ticket is tax-deductible.
Those who cant make Thursdays party can register, donate to the cause or learn more about Aspen Summit for Life 2007 online at www.SummitForLife.org or by contacting contact Holly Upper at Holly.Upper@gmail.com or calling her at (970) 300-4741.
