The right public servant for the job

Dear Editor:

Mick Ireland has dedicated his life to being a public servant. Even when he was a reporter for The Aspen Times in the early '80s, he distributed questionnaires to voters to determine why they voted for X and against Y. His deep study has never stopped. During his time on the Pitkin Board of County Commissioners, he became familiar with political activists all over the Western Slope.

There is a growing political movement based on the notion that local and state government is the only defense against the predations of extractive industries running amok with the blessing of the Bush 43 administration. Mick has learned his lessons so well that he has become an intellectual resource for the Conservator Movement (my term).

You can't be an effective physician, architect or engineer without knowing the basics. Mick has learned a lot from the five elections he has won, including the two recalls. However much hot air is released during election cycles, it all comes down to the numbers. Part of Mick's brain is programmed to remember the numbers of votes cast for this or that in dozens of counties, going back a decade or more. Activists have been coming to talk to Mick for years about how to put liberal/enviro people onto BOCCs and city councils and into the state Legislature. After they get there, Mick gives them good advice on effectuating incremental change. Mick was one of five votes on the BOCC. He knows when and how to be collegial, which is almost all the time. As mayor, he will be one of five.

Mick has a larger vision than his opponent. As mayor, Aspen will raise its voice in the debate on saving the environment.
