SNOWMASS VILLAGE — The passenger who was seriously injured in a two-car collision Saturday on Highway 82 in El Jebel died on Sunday, according to his employer, Snowmass Village Mayor Doug Mercatoris.
Alejandro Carranza, who worked at Mercatoris’ Snowmass restaurant, The Mountain Dragon, was airlifted to Denver after a crash Saturday at the entrance to the Blue Lake subdivision.
The Snowmass Village restaurant community is mourning two losses this week — Carranza and Rolando Ocaña Figueroa, the employee at the Big Hoss Grille who died early Sunday after the vehicle he was driving went out of control on Brush Creek Road in Snowmass Village and landed in Brush Creek, at the bottom of a steep embankment. His vehicle wasn’t spotted until Monday; autopsy results indicate Ocaña Figueroa died from the cold.
“I think our community is suffering a tragic loss by losing two hard-working, well-known restaurant workers who have been working in our village for years,” Mercatoris told the Snowmass Sun, the community’s weekly newspaper.
Ocaña Figueroa, 31, had a wife and three children in Mexico, and had worked at several area restaurants.
Carranza, 24, an El Salvadoran, worked as a cook at The Mountain Dragon for three years.
He was the passenger in a vehicle driven by Jose Guadalupe-Alfaro, 31, of El Jebel, on Saturday when Guadalupe-Alfar, driving downvalley on Highway 82, attempted to turn into Blue Lake across the right-hand lane, according to the Colorado State Patrol. Steven King of Woody Creek was driving in that lane and broadsided Guadalupe-Alfaro’s car.
In all, six people where taken to hospitals, according to the patrol, and Guadalupe-Alfaro was cited with five counts of careless driving causing bodily injury, and one count each of failing to yield right of way and driving without a valid driver’s license. One of the charges could now be upgraded to careless driving causing death, at the discretion of the district attorney’s office, according to the patrol.
