Road work under way

PITKIN COUNTY — Motorists should drive with care and expect short delays as Pitkin County Road and Bridge crews will work in several areas around the county, generally between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., until May 17.

Crews are repairing ditches along Upper River Road, performing dust control and applying magnesium chloride on East Sopris Creek Road and patching pavement at the Aspen Business Center, according to a statement from the department.

For more information, call Road and Bridge at 920-5390.

Fundraiser: Tee up to help out

CARBONDALE — The Roaring Fork Public Education Foundation's popular golf fundraiser for local public schools returns to River Valley Ranch in Carbondale on May 19.

This is the 28th year for the event. Proceeds help supplement classroom programs and teacher opportunities in the Roaring Fork School District.

The tournament format is four-player teams, with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start and

scramble play. Golfers may compete in teams, or register solo, duo or trio. All teams and players are handicapped to give everyone an even chance.

This year's competition includes a hole-in-one contest, with a two-year lease on a new Ford Fusion, courtesy of Glenwood Springs Ford, as the prize. There are also prizes for longest drives and for closest to the pin. The tournament fees cover golf, souvenirs and meals, including the official registration dinner Friday at the Village Smithy restaurant.

Sign-in and practice begin at 7:30 a.m. on the day of the tournament, which will finish with an awards banquet and lunch at the River Valley Ranch barn.

For information, call Irene at 379-6569 or e-mail rfpef.golf@comcast.net.

TV viewers will have to change channels

The managers of Pitkin County's television translator system have been making a few upgrades, according to a statement from the county.

Aspen-area viewers of the Pitkin County TV & FM Translator system will now find NBC back on Channel 8; it was temporarily on Channel 19.

Aspen viewers also will soon be able to view GrassRoots TV and CGTV (the government channel). Both will begin broadcasting for the Aspen area on or around Memorial Day weekend, on Channel 19 (GrassRoots) and Channel 21 (CGTV), although remote parts of the county will not be able to get the stations.

The county also offers the following television stations: Fox (except for certain locations in Aspen and the upper valley), PBS, NBC, ABC and CBS.

Bear makes appearance in Glenwood

GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Edith Gonzalez went looking for juice Monday and got a jolt of excitement instead.

The 12-year-old Glenwood Springs resident had gone to grab a drink for her sister and spotted a bear on the balcony of her Midland Avenue home, which backs up to prime bear habitat.

Edith said she worried the bear might have been young enough that its mother might be around, so she and her sister tried to remain quiet and not disturb it. She then spoke to her mom, Sylvia, who had taken a trip to the grocery store, and the family contacted police.

Glenwood Springs police Lt. Bill Kimminau said the bear "looked like a little 1-year-old working his way down Midland."

The bear apparently was wandering from trash can to trash can, Kimminau said. It eventually ran off.

The incident served as a reminder that the animals are back out of hibernation - and hungry.

"That's the first bear sighting that I think we've gotten this year, so they haven't become prevalent yet," Kimminau said. (Glenwood Springs Post Independent)
