Dear Editor:

My thanks to the 2,209 voters who made democracy work Tuesday with their votes for mayor and council. And a special thank you to candidates Torre and Bonnie Berhend, who contributed their ideas, time and energy to giving voters a set of alternatives.

In particular, Torre gave up a likely council seat victory to press hard for his beliefs in limited development, transportation and the environment. I hope he continues to be active advancing those causes.

I also want to thank Tim Semrau for focusing on issues and solutions to problems. While the two of us have very different ideas on the direction this community should take, I appreciate the clarity of his views.

Finally, I wish to thank our team of campaign volunteers for the ideas and energy that made it possible for us to address in some detail the issues of the environment, affordable housing, growth management, construction and the loss of local-serving businesses. This was truly your campaign as much as mine and I am grateful to you for your help.

Please vote absentee if you will not be here for the final round of voting on June 5.

Mick Ireland
