For 34 years, there has been a strong Aspen consensus for strictly controlled growth, affordable housing and mass transit. Despite that consensus, at least three powerful factors have often diverted us from the steep path to achieve our goals: intense political pressure, complicated issues and the rapid rate at which they hit local leaders.
Our local government leaders are in a pressure cooker every day. And we keep turning up the heat. I know I'm not overstating the challenge because I was there once. And though I was regarded as tough at the time, I caved in more than once.
I can't overstate the intensity of this challenge, both emotionally and technically. And few people currently in local office or running for office are up to it. Yes, many are nice, likeable, and smile well at ceremonies, but few can both understand the full complexity of the issues and handle the pressure.
Mick Ireland is one of those few. We know what he stands for. We know that he can handle the tough job of helping run this little city. I can't imagine voting for anyone else.
