Immigration issues continued to dominate online commentary at aspentimes.com last week, as readers weighed in on various articles addressing the controversial topic.
Last weeks report about Ido Revel of Israel, who was forced to go home when he lost the Little Nell job that was tied to his temporary work visa, spurred several comments among online readers, including this one:
Good to see the system is working!!!
Then came this response:
This is such a mean comment. the system is not working if such an attitude is displayed. also humans should find compassion in their heart to people working for them. this is so much more important than 'the system'.
Finally, there was this:
This is the ugly side of American culture. Americans should feel a discrace that this is the attitude to a positive young man who comes to work. Where is the compassion? How come nobody had the guts to stand up for Ido and help him??? Ido performed no crime and was treated as criminal. Ido should receive and appology letter for this disgracefull episode caused by the Nell. Ariel
Last weeks article regarding the difficulty agencies like the local housing authority and the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority are having as they try to comply with new state laws aimed at illegal immigrants produced this response:
It is too bad illegals were EVER allowed to even be here to begin with and worse that they were NOT screened re legality before accessing our tax money because this would not be an issue if our law had been followed to begin with. Since it wasn't--tough re temporary employees--you agencies have known since SUMMERTIME that people with DL's from Alaska are not recognized etc...no excuses for not enforcing the STATE law now is there? Besides jail and fines to you all personally? Did the directors with RFTA pony up the hotel costs personally, out of pocket? Or did taxpayers? if it is the latter--that is ILLEGAL and in the case of legal Americans, we do prosecute...just not in the case of illegals...
A Dec. 29 guest opinion by Frosty Wooldridge, What Brokow didnt report about illegals, regarding a recent NBC special report on immigration that focused on the Roaring Fork Valley and local contractor Gould Construction, produced plenty of online comment.
Said one reader, who identified him or herself as a long-time local, offered this:
Frosty's facts, like he said, really are the tip of this huge iceberg sinking our ship.
And Brokejaw absolutely did not tell the whole story.
So far I only know of 2 people in this whole valley who are not completely fed up with our situation. People are tired of this!
Shops and grocery stores sell isles of goods in a foreign langauge.
There is so much crime from illegals.
Several illegals seem to have approximately 5.2 cars per person, polluting our air even more.
These cars are turning front yards into year-round dirt pies, and crowding our streets to the point of making plowing and street cleaning impossible. It's ugly!
Our economy and our lifestyle is seriously threatened, and this is unacceptable!
As a business owner, I challenge all businesses to comply and not hire illegals, or I want to know who you are. If you are not completely certain that you are not hiring illegals from anywhere, I want your business name plastered on the valley newspaper covers for all to see, including ICE.
Another reader had this to say, in part:
Thank you Frosty for your excellent comment regarding Brokaw. As usual, you're right on target!
That cheesy Brokaw (CFR member) doesn't have to live with it, have his grandkids in the same schools or deal with any of the problems related to illegal aliens. He's probably in some gated community or compound somewhere.
And really, the Gould Company and any others who do hire illegal immigrants should be jailed, heavily fined and never be allowed to hold a business license again as long as they live.
A Texan had this to say:
I appreciate you for noticing the incredible audacity of the facts not being revealed. I am from Houston, Texas and went to the store the other day and no one spoke English. Let's get to the increasing problem in America before it is too late. We have more than one million new immigrants in the last few years.
I got my purse stolen and had an insurance check from a reputable American Co. for $57.00 on a Sunday. The Fiesta store would not accept an American Passport, my birth certificate, social security card, and a copy of my driver's license.
They would only accept "Mexican Working Cards" as a form of Identification. I am not in America anymore. My rights as a citizen are slowly being taken away as we sit back and pay all their medical and dental bills. We sit back and think we are doing people justice. We are only hurting our own people.
I appreciate the fact that someone is noticing the critical change in our country. Thank you for your story.
